Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new beginning. Fall is such an exciting time of year, with school starting, leaves changing and those holidays right around the corner! The staff is excited to begin a new year and greet all those anxious little faces. Because orientation becomes hectic, we would like to list a few things that your child will need for school, and to share some general information.

We realize that your child might not be as eager to greet us on the actual first day of school. We also realize how upsetting it can be to a mother if your child is crying and doesn't want to get out of the car, but please, we have a lot of experience dealing with "first day jitters." Please help us by letting the staff remove the child from the car. Let one of us open the door of your car and take the child from their seat. Before leaving your home if you say something like: " let's have a good-bye hug and kiss at home." Then while waiting in line, if your child seems really upset say something like: "I know you're not happy, but mommy will be back to pick you up in a while, have a great day!" This does get easier for both parent and child, REALLY! If your child is upset when getting out of the car a staff member will call you to let you know how things are going later in the morning.

Your child will need a backpack. We use the packs to get their projects and important information to you. We realize that the children like to choose their own backpacks but please pick a standard size. It may look overwhelming on your child, but they manage very well. One more thought on backpacks. . .the children are provided everything they need at school, i.e., pencils, scissors, and crayons. Please check your child's backpack for school library books and notes - it is our communication pack. Small children like to fill up their backpacks with all sorts of "things." Please encourage them to leave these at home. If your child needs to take things to a sitter or friend's home, please put it in something separate. PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING.

Your child will need a plastic crayon box (LLS provides the crayons). The plastic boxes sell for $.99 to $1.99 in discount stores. Crayon boxes are returned at the end of the year.

Your child will need a complete set of clothes to keep at school. Please package the clothes in the Ziploc that this note is in, because it is labeled with your child's class and name. Clothes will be returned at the end of the year.

Please mark jackets, sweaters and any other articles of clothing your child might remove and leave at school. A masking tape label on the garment tag that appears at the base of the neck works well, as does marking the label with permanent marker or laundry pen. Label your child's backpack the same way with masking tape on the inside or using a permanent marker on the inside, you would be surprised how many pink Barbie or red Spiderman backpacks we see!

Your child will need an old T-shirt with short sleeves. Please send an old one that can get messy. We will use these as paint shirts. PLEASE DON'T BUY ANYTHING SPECIAL! An older sibling's T-shirt or a small adult size works very well. Although we use non-toxic washable paints, markers and crayons, we've found that sometimes these things don't easily wash out. The following "recipe" has worked well for when clothing comes home particularly messy.

Soak the articles overnight in a bucket filled with:

  • 2 gallons of hot water
  • 1 cup of "Cascade" dishwasher soap
  • 1 cup of "Tide with bleach"
  • 1 cup of "Clorox 2" non-chlorine bleach

Pour mixture into washing machine and fill machine with hot water. Turn off your machine for 30 minutes to one hour. Run through regular wash cycle. Run the clothes through the wash cycle again... just to make sure that all of the soap is out.

Pre-school/kindergarten is a place to experience media that we, as parents, might not want to get involved with (because of the mess.) THE BEST DRESS FOR SCHOOL IS: shorts, jeans or sweats, sneakers, socks, T-shirts, and a sweatshirt that can be removed if doing projects. If we are having an occasion that your child needs to be "dressed up," we will send home a note. Your child needs to be comfortable.

Every month we will send home a calendar of events. We do put our calendar on our website: www.LitchfieldLittleSchool.com along with articles and informative notes about special events. So, if you lose a calendar or note you can always look there. You can also refer others to take a look at what's going on at our school.

If at anytime you should have questions, please call me - either at school (881-5888) or at home (Mrs. Frost 883-5778). I'm eager to hear any concerns you might have about your child's school experience. I want everyone, child and parent, to have a positive school experience!

Sincerely,

Dellann Frost
